Amazon.com Product Description
The First Alert Motion-Sensing Light Socket quickly and easily transforms an ordinary light socket into a motion-sensing socket. This clever device will automatically turn on a light when it senses movement, and it will turn off the light after movement is no longer detected. This means you can finally stop worrying about fumbling for a light switch when your hands are full or finding a hard-to-reach pull-string in the dark.

This hands-free, motion-sensitive lighting device helps improves safety and convenience in your home. View larger.

The Motion-Sensing Light Socket
At-a-Glance:
  • Hands-free lighting device turns on with movement
  • Detects motion in every direction
  • Installs easily into an existing light socket
  • 3-year limited warranty
Convenient, Automatic Lighting
Ideal for laundry rooms, basements, walk-in closets, garages, or anywhere a light switch isn't in a convenient spot, the First Alert Motion-Sensing Light Socket is a hands-free lighting device that turns on when you enter a room and automatically turns off four minutes after movement stops.

Senses Movement in All Directions
Able to operate in broad daylight or pitch-black darkness, this light socket features a 360-degree motion sensor that will detect a person approaching within twelve feet when installed at an eight-foot height. To achieve maximum motion sensitivity, use the handy arrows marked on the unit to determine the strongest response, adjusting the 180-degree points to face a door or other high-traffic area as needed.

Simple Installation for Immediate Use
With the First Alert Motion-Sensing Light Socket, you can get the convenience of automatic lighting without the expensive installation. Just screw the motion-sensing socket directly into an existing light socket, and then fasten the light bulb into the new fixture. The socket works with 25-100 watt bulbs (the product is not suitable for use with enclosed, shaded, or halogen bulbs).

The First Alert Motion-Sensing Light Socket is backed by a three-year limited warranty.

First Alert Motion-Sensing Light Socket

The Motion-Sensing Light Socket (pictured in the center) illuminates a lightbulb when you enter a room,
then turns it off four minutes after movement stops.

Product Description
Things may go bump in the dark, but you don't have to be one of them! The First Alert motion sensing light socket turns the light onN when you enter a room or open a closet, and then turns it off after you leave. It combines the safety and security of a well-lit room with the convenience of easy installation. The hands-free motion sensor screws right into a standard, uncovered light socket, just like a light bulb. No additional wiring is required. The socket senses motion within 360 degrees and is ideal for laundry rooms, garages, basements, attics, walk-in closets, and stairways. Use with 25 to 100-watt bulbs. Not for outdoor use.

5 out of 5 stars So far, so good   September 6, 2010
S. Minvielle (Santa Cruz, CA USA)
I installed one of these in a closet with a pullchain switched socket which my mother could not reach, and it has worked great so far. Even at $25 it is a great deal considering installing a simple wall mounted manual switch would probably cost just as much in material, plus at least a couple of hours labor installing it, without the advantage of having it motion controlled.
The only concern I have is with all the reviews that say the electronics in the unit get fried when the lightbulb burns out. If this is the case then it seems like First Alert should advise you to put a brand new bulb in to begin with and maybe change the bulb twice a year or so, as this would be much cheaper than buying a new motion sensor. I intend to contact First Alert (1-800-323-9005) to see if this is a manufacturing problem, and whether the 3 year warranty will cover it.

Does not work well. When it does work, long delay. Replaced it with a remote light switch.

1 out of 5 stars Don't buy it unless you can conveniently return it   August 25, 2010
D Bollman
Worked for one day. I used it with a CFL and it seemed to work for a while now it just flickers the CFL and won't turn on an incandescent at all. As others have said it requires some light to be present for the motion sensor to work.

1 out of 5 stars Worked for about 5 minutes   August 25, 2010
Baroke
Was great for about 5 minutes until it stopped working. Okay, maybe it was two days. It definitely wasn't more than that. I'm still in denial that I paid money for this thing so it's a paperweight in my office.

2 out of 5 stars Not so good   August 20, 2010
Jaime A Trillos M (HIALEAH, FL, US)
Bought two, only one worked. The one that works does it anytime, day or night, it's hypersensitive.
